Default 4x4 newbie help

First off I have only owned a Thunderbird and a few Hondas. With that said I just bout a stock 77' F 150 with the 351w and 4x4 I don't know the trany or transfer case. My questions are; how do i engage 4x4, do I get out and lock the hubs or not, do i have to have the truck in drive or neutral, can i engage 4x4 on the fly or not, how do i shift from differnt gears when i am in 4x4 since there is no clutch and every car i've had that i had to shift gears had a clutch, also what are the 4x4 gears used for and when. Thanks nick

Put it in park , get out and lock the hubs, get back in put it in 4wd and then your good to go. Do the reverse when you are done with 4wd. It used to be advisable to not drive to much with the transfer case in 2wd and the hubs locked. Its been awhile since I have had a vehicle with manual hubs so that is just some general advice.
