Is a 4x4 1989 Ford Ranger 2.9 or a 1992 Ford Explorer 4x4 4.0 manual transmission best for off-road applications?

IMO. Explorer, better power, and a bigger front end. No other reason than that though. I had 2 rangers at one point in time, one 1984 2.8L C-5 3spd auto, one 1993 4.0 5spd. Both 4x4. The power from the 4.0 and reliability of the bigger front end made the difference to me.
