Trying to decide on moto metal 0970 wheel size with 265/70/17 tires. They offer a 0 offset 17x8 and a+12 offset 17x9. Sales guy said the poke would be the same with both because the 9 inch would extend 1/2” on both sides. It would the same 265 tire on either the 8 or 9 inch wheel, so I don’t see how that can be true. I agree the sidewall will be wider with the 9”, but not the tread, it’s 265 either way so poke should be less with the +12 offset 17x9 imo. Agree or no?
in other words, does wheel width really affect poke if measured at outer diameter (tread)?
A 17x9 adds 25.4mm width or 12.7mm per side, the 12mm offset moves the wheel 12mm farther back into the wheel well. The outer edge of the wheel will be in nearly the same place or same "poke". KM

I agree with you, the WHEEL will be 1/2” wider on each side with a 9 vs 8. but I don’t think that correlates to more POKE because the TIRE width doesn’t change. The sidewall area near the wheel should be 1/2” wider, but not the tire tread, right? Tire tread width can’t magically expand 1” just because of a wider rim. So I’m saying it’s a myth that wider rims (with same tire size) equals more poke. That my theory, somebody prove me wrong if my thinking is off.
Tire poke vs wheel poke, 2 ways to look at it. Consider my truck with 10x17 0 offset wheels. The wheels will be 1 inch farther out and the same size tire sidewall and bead poke out a similar amount just the tread stays centered. The sidewalls and beads will widen out to fit the wheel. Then consider the wheels in my photo with 305-70-17 tires, the wheel stays the same but now the tire poke is much more. We are just using different methods to say the same within the parameters defined. In simpler terms yes I agree! KM
PS: The photo just match what you are considering and I tend toward visual representation. That is a 2017 so in the middle of the year range, pre 2015 steel bodied F150s are different in wheel track and I'm not sure about 2020 and up. km

In my experiences, anything 10 wide and a wider tire will start to give a "poke" with an oem offset. Any less pos into negative offset will affect your poke.

Yes. You'll get the same "poke" with both of those wheels. The 17x9 +12 wheel hub is pushed out (in relation to the centerline of the wheel) by 12mm (which really moves the wheel in 12mm) but the outer rim is pushed out 12.5mm (or half an inch) with the wheel being an inch wider.
