Difference between 305 and 285 tires...

Is there a huge difference between 305/70 R16 and 285/75 R16? Is the 285 that much shorter or is it just more narrow? Thanks

The height is the same. The width of the 285/75/16 is 8/10ths of an inch narrower. http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-comparison/ The first number is the width in mms. The second number is a height ratio.
