Default 18" wheel vs 17" wheel and tire options

New to the fourm and fords. Just bought an 04 supercrew 4x4. It has ford 17" wheels with 265 70 tires on it. I know these came stock with 18" wheels so I think someone took off their good wheels and tires and put a set of 17" take offs on. It needs new tires soon and I am dissapointed with the clearance (8.5") vs my old silverado (10"). My question I was thinking of putting 285 70 17 on, it seems these will fit with out leveling kit or lifting and give me about an inch more clearance. My question is am I loosing anything by not having the stock 18" wheel size? Ride, clearance, etc or is it just looks? Also it seems with the 17" wheels I have now, putting the wider 285 70 on there is about .8 inch wider tire than I have now. Are there any draw backs to having that wide of a tire on a stock 17" wheel?

Thanks for any info or suggestions?

I have 285/70/17 BFG AT KO's on my truck with a 2.5" leveling kit and have zero problems. I like the smaller wheel and bigger tire combo, it helps when airing down on the beach etc. Just my $.02.

its entirely possible that your truck came with 17's. to be sure, check out the tire info sticker inside the drivers door. this will tell you for sure what size tires/wheels came on your truck from the factory.

which style 04 do you have? the 5lug 97-03 "heritage" 04 or the 6 lug 04-08 style. either way I think you will be just fine with 285/70/17's
