My experience with sub woofers is only in the ones I have had in my "Ham Shack" which is where all of my electonics, radios, and AV stuff lives. My favorite speakers are Polk Audio, and Kilpsch. Unforunately Kilpsch does not make car speakers.

First thing I got the pioneer premier http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=17852 and it sounds awsom definitly better than the visonik I had.
Second all the speakers you guys have shown me in links have been 300watts rms or less if I were to get those brands I would pay alot more. I need a 400watt rms.

oh... most subs will handle alot more if they have clean power. Plus they all rate there subs differently. Most times it is just a preference thing. glad you like your sub it is always nice to get new toys.

I heard a good rule of thumb is to try and match the specs of the amp and sub

Well I will be powering my JL Audio 10 sub for my truck with a JL 500/1. It is what I have so it will have to work.

Yeah I'm not against what you have so it's gonna work. I had a visonik 350watt rms sub on my 400watt rms amp. Just be carfull that you don't over power it.

Well most times power is not what kills a sub it is distortion. Hince the reason people are able to blow stock speakers with a stock deck. Most crank the bass and then up the volume all the way to cause distortion. I use the deck Xover and a external xover along with the amp settings to keep things clean as possible.

One thing to note about JL's ratings- They rate them at say 300 RMS as optimum. They will still warranty the same W3 at 500 RMS so That tells me they are just rating them a little conservatively since there are so many people that don't understand proper x-over setup, box building, Gain settings, and System setup in general. That and there is a BIG difference between say a JL or Alpine 400 Watt RMS amp and a Boss or similar low budget brand 400 watt RMS Amp. Unclean signals at low frequency and high volume can destroy speakers faster than too much power in a clean signal.

I'm going to be running a plain old Kicker comp 10" rated at 150 RMS on a 300 RMS amp. I'm anxious to see how long it will last. I'm building my box to house a JL 10W3V3 but have 2 of those kickers laying around so WTF I'll see how long they last.

one way to look at it is like this.... if the amp is too large you can alwasy turn it down and also get a cleaner signal... but you cant turn up a 200 watt amp to do 300 watts worth of sound... wording may not be tech correct but i think you get my meaning....
