After breakfast we will head back to a local business to do some A/B/X listening tests with speakers. Possibly a small tour for anyone that hasn't been there yet.
Too bad I'm on the east coast. I'd like to hear what some different setups sound like. Might stop by a local custom car stereo place to see what they have, and what services they offer.
Me too……nothing over here really. Which is nice at times 👍🏿 I had a guy listen to mine, said it was the best 150 he had heard……🤷🏿♂️ I’m getting the itch to “upgrade” tho
A sweet custom kayak with radio installed and 8" sub in the back!
The test vehicle with a RF T19 on like 5000 watts! Quote from Rick "That thing tickled the inside of my ear!"
The Speaker Listening test (bookshelf speakers with acoustically transparent cloth) Note* We did not level set due to a listening session going on this next week and we didn't want to mess that up, but the three speakers (not polk monitor 40) were very close to the same levels as is, the polk was much higher level. All of these were driven by the same signal, song, and used a wharfedale 6 speaker switcher that can switch nearly instantly.
None of us knew which one was on which cable. We ran the chords, randomly picked them up and plugged them into the speakers and then randomly connected the other ends at the switcher. Covered speakers so we couldn't see which one was playing. Then played a couple of songs and listened to each speaker first on the same song and made notes. Then listened and switched quicker to see differences.
The SVS and the Mini monitor were very close, the mini ended up winning due to increased lower end but the SVS beat the mini on female vocal clarity.
The speakers Philharmonic Audio Mini Monitor (left) First Place for most Good overall but female vocals were a little muffled compared to SVS. Reached much deeper than the svs.
Custom Mini Bookshelf (Top middle) Fourth Place for most Just couldn't compete against the rest, sounded small comparatively. Not made to be this far away.
SVS SBS-01 Small Bookshelf Speaker (bottom middle) Second Place for most Good overall, liked the female vocals better but didn't dig quite as deep.
Polk Audio Monitor 40 (right) Third Place for most Resonances could be heard. Hard to really judge this one based on levels. Lacked bass compared to the mini monitor.
Did how loud is twice as loud this weekend. If I remember correctly our 4 person average was 9.5db. One person was 8.5db and most were in the 9's. So the research saying that 10db is twice as loud seems to hold true.
We did this using a DSP board where it was a near instant a/b and level control. Multiple times for each change randomly done.
Wondering how my old Velodyne speakers compete with those setups. I've had them for more then 10 years and they still sound great to me.
