Question Sync 3 Version 1

Hello all,

I am a brand new FORD owner here in Northern Louisiana. I switched from Toyota over to a 2016 F-150 Platinum and am more than impressed so far.
I’ve spent the majority of my first weekend trying every method I can find to update the existing Sync 3 from Version 1 to the latest version (3.0?). Although this has given me an opportunity to sit in the truck for a few hours and get familiar with everything, I am still unable to update this head unit.
What I have tried so far: downloaded latest software via the Ford website, unpacked the file using Windows (this took a while as the AS and CE files gave me issues), used a 3.0 64gb usb drive to transport the files formatted with exFat.
this setup gave me the installation failed “not enough space” message after 15-25 mins.
i spoke with Ford using their chat service and they recommend using a 2.0 usb and that 3.0 USB’s are not compatible. so I copied the files over to a 32gb 2.0 usb, repeated the process and got the same error (it took a little longer, maybe 30+ mins)
I found a version 2.2 with nav update file that someone had uploaded and tried it on the 2.0 usb stick (with much hesitation).
I let it run almost an hour before getting the same “not enough space” message.

Many of the forums I scored through were from the 2016-2017 period. Since then, has anyone discovered a sure fix for this besides visiting the stealership?
Note: My system shows a Build 15139 with Gracenote 1.1.1.615 and I do have Nav
i tried formatting the 2.0 with both exFat and Fat32
