Question Oil Consumption

I have a "07" Lariat crewcab with the 5.4L. It has 22,000 miles. I have noticed since my first time changing the oil(5000mile intervals) that the truck is always a quart low at the 5000 mile mark to change the oil. i started using Mobil 1 fully synthetic at 10000 miles and a Fram oil filter-- (which i always used on every vehicle i ever owned and never had a problem with). I never owned a vehicle that would be this low at the time of an oil change. I let my wife's car (06 Mercury Milan) go 10000 miles before i change the oil and the level never changes. On her car i also use Mobil 1 and a motorcraft filter because i can never find a filter for it except for at the ford/mercury dealership. Can the filter be the problem? I have owned previous ford vehicles and never had a problem like this. I understand a truck will use some oil but this seems a little to much for me. I dont see any leaks anywhere. I am ready to take it to the dealership but something tells me this will be within their limits of satisfactory. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Welcome, see this is your first post. To answer your question, no, its not the filter. Couple of ideas for you to consider as you learn your truck. Location of oil dipstick, front of engine or rear of engine. Has alot to do with oil level readings in regards to slope of driveways. Always try to have the truck as level as is possible. I like to check my oil level right after I have changed the oil and filter so I know where the proper reading should be. Is there any concern about 1 quart in 5k miles? No, none at all. Its better to run an engine a quart low than a quart over full. Keep up your oil change interval and keep an eye on the level. Don't overfill it.

Default oil consumption

Thanks for the reply. I do make sure i have the truck level when i check it. I check the oil in the same spot in the driveway where i change it so i am making sure i am consistent. I also do check it right after i change the oil and it is always between the upper and lower markings on the dipstick. Does it make a difference if i check it when the motor is hot? I was always under the impression if i let it sit it gives it time to let the all the oil drain into the pan. let me now what you think. Thanks

Let is sit a minute or two.. A quart like he stated is not bad.. The rule of thumb USED to be a quart every 1000 miles was acceptable... Not to me.. but to the manufacturer it was. Fram filters are not as good as they used to be.. I know back in the day they were good. I switch to wix or motorcraft after taking them apart and seeing how little filter media the Fram has in it compared to the others.

Your procedure on checking your oil level is right on target. As NGM said, and is your impression, best to let sit a bit is perfect. I hadn't done the oil filter comparrison, good stuff to be aware off. Guess thats why Fram offers three varieties, good, bad and awful. Motorcraft, Yeah baby!
