Hey everyone, I'm surprised I haven't joined an f150 forum in the past but better late than never. I've always been a ford fan, started with my first car...68 mustang, straight 6, well restored and my first love lol! I've since owned a second 68 mustang V8, an 88 mustang GT, and a 98 mustang GT lol. In the F-150 world I've had a 97 ( I believe?...it was the newer body style), an 08 4.6 (amazing truck), 06 FX4, and an even newer 18 crew cab v8 long bed big boy work truck. In between I've had a 96 Taurus, countless other non Fords (but still fun) and my current DD is my Dad's 2012 focus I inherited.
So what brought me here is my current situation. My focus is getting up there in mileage 164k and lets face it I'm not gonna bulletproof it so I am looking for something else. I've been putting money away to buy something new and I'm stuck between NEW NEW or a running project that can be down at times relying on my trusty 4 banger focus and my Kawasaki lol.
About a year ago I was buying something from FB marketplace and I came across someone driving a 96 f-150 with the 5.0 (which the kid referred to as an old green POS ford truck), decent shape and seemed fine for its age. I made a comment and said if they ever wanna let it go let me know. I recently checked in to see if they still had it and sure enough its just sitting, dead battery but he would check to see if his dad would consider letting it go finally. To me that means he's probably attached and gonna ask for more but also that its been cared for over the years. I never got to go through the truck so I'm just going off of memory from a year ago but from what I remember it had a nice straight body and the motor sounded strong. I don't know if its 4x4 or not but I'm hoping it is because well...4x4 lol. Only other thing I've been told is that it has around 225k miles. So if I do get the opportunity to get it, what should I look for? Everything I read online says this is a very solid year for F-150s. Being high mileage what can I do to get the most out of it? What's a good starting point if I want to build this truck up to be a solid dependable, and impressive DD? I love the look of these older body trucks, especially with a little lift and fresh paint. We had one at a previous company I worked for, about this year model, used as a light duty work truck, and it had 300k miles and still trucked on like a champ so I've seen the dependability of them. What kind of price range would be fair if he is open to sell?
Feel free to make any other recommendations as far as year models, specific packages etc. I'm not set on this truck specifically I just really liked it and if the opportunity arises I might as well consider it. I have a 10-30k budget depending on what route I go. I see older trucks built up but they really want a premium for the work and money they put in. For 20-30k I might as well get another car that's only 2 years old, sporty and reliable for a good 10 years but there's nothing exciting or unique about that. I work at an auto auction (Copart), I can't buy from them because of this but I'm much more familiar with what to look for if I wanted to consider a salvage/rebuilt title route from a different source. Obviously auctions and salvages have downsides but price point can't be beat. I know my post is all over the place, really just looking for some input so TIA!
