Default New from Alabama

Hello, I was searching for something about a 4x2 to 4x4 conversion and it brought up a thread from here. So I thought I would stick around. I'm also in a couple of forums for my car (2006 Chevy Cobalt) and another forum that talks about Ford 6 Cyl engines, which is what my 1986 red F150 has, a 4.9L 300 6 Cyl. It is a long wheel base, BASE model, no carpet, Am radio, bench seat and just heat, so i figure what truck would be a better 4x4.

I'm relatively new to the world of cars. I've been around them my whole life, I just had other interest. Now my focus has shifted. This truck was my first vehicle and I just want to make a labor of love.

Welcome to the board.
From what I have read, regarding 4x2 to 4x4 conversions, it will indeed be a labor to pull off the exchange. Good luck!

the problem that i'm having now is finding a ttb front axle - since the 86 has independent front suspension anyway, i figured that would be a little easier than going to an sa - but not if i cant find one

None of the salvage yards near you have one?

There's only one salvage yard within a couple of hours from me. and they only take late model wrecks and then part them out. I ask the other day and they said they didn't have any 4x4's there - I've combed ebay and craigslist and haven't had any luck - I would just put it back to stock if it was a better model but it's as base as it got in 1986. It's also long wheel base fleet side, so there is a very large plain bedbehind it. Just to give you an idea - it used to be a cattle truck that a farmer would load cows into and take them to the auction. My dad bought it in 1995 with the cattle cage still on it.

If you do find an axle for your truck, you will need to make sure it is geared the same as the rear. I found this site that searches salvage yards around the country. You enter the vehicle info and what part you are looking for and it does the search and gives you a listing of yards that have the part and the price, etc. Good luck with your search.
