Ignition Problem
Good afternoon. I'm Jackcat37. I have a 1987 Ford F150, 2WD, tilt steering, 4.9L six with manual transmission.
First indication of the problem. There is no power with the key turned to the run position. With the key in the Start position, the lights come on, radio, etc but the starter does not turn over.
Second indication of the problem. The key in the cylinder tends to hang up and sticks in the lock position but moves after a giggle. I have replaced the cylinder and now it works correctly, but still the same problem.
Third indication of the problem. Before replacing the cylinder and still now the key comes out of the cylinder without pressing the key release. This never happened before.
Fourth part that really has me stumped. I have the Haynes manual but it does not seem to recognize the tilt steering configuration. It says to remove the bracket holding the steering column in position and find the ignition switch on top of the steering column. In the configuration I have all the components are inside the casting just below the steering wheel.
Ok. How do I get into that to see what is broken? From the top end by pulling the steering wheel? I'm reluctant to do that because I believe there is an air bag.
Has anyone ever run into this?

Here's the Truck

The ignition switch is completely hidden until you remove the panel under the dash and 1/2 of the lower Dash Finish Panel. Unless you are 2 feet tall and weigh less then 5 lbs, removing the broken switch and installing the replacement is impossible without removing the lower Dash finish panel.

This shows the replacement reconnected to the actuator and in place on the steering column. Not much left now.
