I'm an owner of a 1998 4.6 v8, 155~k.

Very interested in gas mileage improvements.

Sell it and get a car if you are looking to get better than 16-17

good answer, my 97 with 270K still gets about 17 high way but 11 or so city
during the winter though, Im not to sure how it does in the warm weather

Welcome to the site!

These are trucks, afterall, and not economy cars.
You will probably not get much more than 18-20mpg on the highway
and 13-15 around town.
