Hello from NY!
I just picked up a 97 F150 Lariat Crew Cab 4x4 with the 4.6L v8/auto. I picked up the truck as a toy hauler (car, jetskis, snowmobiles, etc). The truck has 98k miles and is overall in good shape.
I picked it up needing some work, clunk in the rear, soft brakes, cracked windshield and A/C needing a new line and recharge. So far I've replaced ALL of the transmission lines (had one let go the first time I drove it), replaced all of the front brake lines and soft lines to calipers (rear lines were recently done by the previous owner), replaced A/C compressor, drier, line that was rotted through and evacuated/recharged the system. It's also picked up an intermittent check engine light that when I scanned it was for insufficient EGR flow (I forget the code). I suspect this is probably either the DPFE or the ports in the intake manifold are full of carbon build-up.
I joined the forums so I could search and see what common causes of the clunk and soft brake pedal are. It looks like I'll be dropping the driveshaft to grease the slip joint and hopefully that'll take care of the clunk. As for the soft brakes, I need to pull the rear drums to make sure the adjusters work properly and everything looks to be in order.
