Default First Ford Truck

Hi, new here, new to Ford trucks as well. I am a newbie chainsaw carver who needed some sort of a truck to carry wood, gear, carvings, saws, etc. I found a 1999 F-150 XLT and bought it yesterday. I am looking to find how to keep this thing running and eventually restore it to decent condition and paint my business name on it. The guy teaching me to carve has a F-250 diesel with a 7.3L motor, and he thinks maybe this truck won't cut it, but I'm broke so I'll have to make due until I can afford a bigger truck.

It has some rust on the box, but nothing I can't live with for now. I need to know how much I can safely load in it, how much I can tow, what mods I can (or should) make to make it a tougher/more suitable work truck than it already is.

It has the small (4.2L) motor, 5-speed manual, working 4WD. GVWR is 6000 Pounds, curb weight is 4200 pounds. Does this mean I can safely (and legally) carry 1800 pounds? Can it be beefed up to carry more weight?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the board.

GVWR minus GVW will give you your max payload, including fuel and passengers. I think they set the figure a bit low. You may find the engine a little lacking in power, but I would think you will be fine if you don't overload it. You can add helper springs to give better ride height with a load in the back.
