Damn that ain't a bad deal. I spend a 24 hr shift every 3rd day at the fire station. So im always washing and cleaning my truck myself to kill time on a slow day. If I didn't have a lot of free time Id definitely do that every couple months!
I probably only apply wax every 3 months, so when I do, I wash with dish washing liquid (to strip off the old wax and any other tough to clean grease and oils). If I have time and if it needs it, I claybar it to remove any dirt and grime that may have embedded itself on the paint and to remove any tree sap. Then when I apply the wax, I use a DA polisher and a foam pad. I don't have a good one, but one from walmart works just fine for this purpose. I like using the DA because it applies the wax very evenly and it does ever so slightly polish the paint. Plus it saves the wear and tear on the arm. Once it hazes up, wipe off with a towel. And then any nooks and crannies that the DA can't reach, I hand apply the wax.
For me, I think the key is to apply a very thin layer. To the point where you can barely see the applied wax. I think a lot of people put on a really thick layer, thinking thicker is better, and it takes forever for the wax to dry. That's when it becomes really difficult to remove. The only way to have a thick layer of wax is to apply in multiple layers and only apply the next layer when the previous layer has had a chance to dry and fully cure.
