Is there a way to adjust/limit the number of posts that show up under “my recent posts”?

There is not, atleast not settings wise. However, if you look at the URL you will see 90 at the end. That is for 90 days. Technically you can alter that number shorter or longer. Note that search limits still apply, so you will still have the 500 post return limit.
