Default Won't start!! Aargh

Hello all - my ford 2010 f150 screw 4x4 4.6L is not starting. I Put the key in. Aux works and all the lights and beeps working. Turn the key to start it up and it turns over fine...key will stay in turning over position (which is strange and it's never done that but I've heard its normal???) until I manually turn it counter clockwise. It never fires up. It will not start. Have tried a dozen times and same result. Super frustrating. Definitely not the battery and I don't think its the starter either. Gas is lower but not empty by any means. At least 4-5gallons. 120k miles. Never had an issue.

Anyone know what the issue is and how to fix it?

does it at least turn over? if it doesn't, it could be something as simple as a starter ground wire. i used to have a navigator with a 5.4 that did this on occasion, lights would come on but never turned over- i had to have it towed to the repair shop only to find out it wasnt turning over because of the shape of the battery cables-it wasn't allowing enough amperage to the starter to roll over, they put on some new ones and BOOM! never had a problem again.

if it is turning over, and not firing, the first thing i would check is your fuel pressure, could be a bad pump, clogged filter, or if you live in a cold climate, could possibly have frozen lines.

broncosfan ... Gas is lower but not empty by any means. At least 4-5gallons. 120k miles. Never had an issue.
From the sound of things it's either fuel or ignition. And based upon the gas situation would suspect a fuel issue ...
  • vehicle not on the level so that the fuel can't get picked-up.
    .
  • fuel line frozen due to condensation in the fuel caused by running the vehicle with a low fuel level.
    .
  • water vapor in the fuel (due to the low level) impeding ignition.
    .
  • contaminated fuel filter either because of infrequent maintenance or consistently running with little fuel in the tank.
    .
  • a failed fuel pump (can you hear it buzz when the key is turned-on) because the fuel tank was regularly/frequently low.
    .
  • do you have fuel pressure at the fuel rail?
If YES ... Start checking the ignition components.
Did anyone ever tell you about why not to run your fuel tank long on fuel?
.

Yes. My brother in law said something about if you ever run out of fuel in these things that are a pain in the *** to get going again. I've never let it run on fumes. Always fuel up around the 50miles to empty but almost always before then. I have never ran out of gas with this truck and the needle is right now pointing at 1/4th of a tank. No low fuel notification on the dash either.

Quality of gas maybe? I dunno. Usually fuel up at safeway and ARCO. Could be some bad gas. I switched from a Titan to this F 150 so the engine noise was naturally just different and sounded a bit noisier to me. I could tell on my Titan when I had a bad tank of gas. This ford always sounds the same to me. Raspier. My brother in law's sounds the same and it's a an older 4.6L V8. (same engine)

Default Further development

I've been gone all day for work came home and noticed this. It was raining all day yesterday and hard, so I could have overlooked this. Checked the oil level and it is low. Would the truck not start if the oil was really low? Last oil change was 3 months ago. No leaks and I park in the same spot at a parking garage everyday. Would have definitely noticed if there was a slow leak. This 'puddle' happened in the last few days.

Yes it is turning over and not firing. Don't live in a cold climate.

i cant tell where that leak is coming from, so i cant say if its bad or not. i would change your oil to make sure there's no coolant in the oil though.. not saying its your head gasket, but doesn't hurt to make sure its not before you go any further, id hate for you to do more damage if it is something worse.

-there may be others on here that could help you more with the leak.

As far as the not starting, if it was me, the next step would be to check the fuel pressure at the rail. if its low, you know whats up, if its within normal #'s you know to keep looking. ill look up the numbers to make sure and post it up on here.

*edit- 4.6 fuel pressure should be between 30 and 45 psi at the rail
