Default Why such small tires?

My friend just got a 2011 F150 XLT 3.7 4x4 and the stock tires are very small. I believe they were P235/70R-17. My 08 STX had P255/70R-17 which are 31's from the factory. Why did ford use such smaller tires on the newer models?

235/70-16 stock on my '03 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4L. Talk about looking like a skateboard.

Back in 1984 my first F-150 had P195x75x15's on it. What a joke! Had some BFG's on it before I left the dealer.

235/75/17's on my '06. Most have the 255/70/17's. No idea why mine are so small.

My truck does have some weird options/lack of options though. Its got a power seat, running boards, automatic headlights, reverse sensors, tow package, trailer package, etc but came with base wheels, no foglights and small tires.

I know right, that's what mine came with too. It doesn't look too bad although I should have got the 20"s ...
