Why doesn't ford have a auto locking diff?
I'd wonder why they need an auto locking diff? Having a locked diff in various situations causes more wear on the mechanicals than potential gain....so i'd prefer it to be on-request for folks who know when it's needed.
As far as I know only GM has the mechanical auto locking diff. And if you ever heard or felt one engage you know that it has to put stress on the gears. I'm sure this is why every one else uses the electronic lockers that are driver controlled.
If your wife's Subaru will go more places off road than your truck you probably need some off road driving tips and practice. The AWD system in Subaru and others does work better in snow, ice and possibly in some light duty off road driving. But when things get rough a 4X4, even with open diff's easily beat them. As well as a 2wd with just a locking rear diff.
Locking diff's are nice, but manually locking them is fine. And people have been driving 4X4's with open diff's for years. Even having that option from the factory is fairly recent. I've owned more than a dozen 4X4 rigs going back to the early 1970's. I never had a locking diff until 2007 on my last 2 trucks. I've only needed it once.
