Default wheel material

Good morning, I have 20" OEM wheels with the PVD chrome finish and wondered what material my wheels are made from, are they steel or aluminum or something else.

Appreciate your feedback

Take a magnet and see if it sticks to the 'inside' of the wheel. If it sticks, you have steel wheels. If it doesn't they are probably aluminum . My bet is the magnet will stick .......

I've got a strong magnet that won't stick to any part of the wheel so they must be aluminum.

Thanks again

Good to hear. The 20 inch chrome clad wheels on our 2014 Edge were steel. They were so heavy I had to use a pry bar to lift them when I rotated the tires. Replace them with 20 inch aluminum wheels and have no problems lifting them when I rotate them

You will probably find that the PVD aluminum wheels weigh more than a steel wheel. Plus the whacking big 20 inch tire is not light just because it is full of air. FWIW, I change my own wheels.

The only reason aluminum wheels exist is because they are lighter. Yeah, oem wheels aren't as light as performance aftermarket wheels, but if you've two wheels of the same diameter, rim width, psi rating and dynamic load rating, the aluminum wheel can be much lighter. The amount of aluminum that is required to obtain the same strength as steel averages 40% less weight.

Yes, a 7.5jx17 steel rim is likely to be lighter than an 8.5jx22 aluminum rim.
