Cam phasers were a 5.4 issue, the 5.0 and EB have other issues.

Is there a way to tell if you have this problem before they become problematic? Is Ford ponying-up to fix them or is it the "shell-game?"

I have an 04 F150 4x4. I absolutely love my truck however I'm disgusted with the cam phaser rattle/knock. I paid a substantial amount of money to have the phasers replaced with what is supposed to be "upgraded" phasers. Engine was quiet and ran smooth for about 10,000 miles. Then it started making a terrible noise for about 4 seconds when I start it up and also sometimes while idling it starts sounding like diesel. I am sick over the money I wasted and very disappointed in FORD for this terribly designed engine. I have always loved Ford trucks and still do better than any other truck. I think they're the sharpest best looking trucks on the road and in my opinion have always (until 2004) built the most dependable trucks.
I've decided to buy a newer Ford possibly brand new. However if I buy a newer used model Can someone on here tell me if and in what year Ford fixed this Cam Phaser issue?

In your case you may have fixed the symptom and not the problem.
What EXACTLY did you have done during the repair and what brand of parts were used?
Start with that and we may be able to explain why the noise came back.

The phasers are being damaged from excessive timing chain slop. The exact reason for the timing chain wear is open to debate, but it appears to be oil related. So long as the chain stays tight, the phasers won't be damaged. Some have been changing their oil more frequently. I've gone from the recommended 10,000 mile interval back down to 5,000. Some are changing their oil even more often. I guess that makes sense if you are really seeing the oil rise from fuel dilution. The catch is that this might be only deferring the chain wear. If you can put the slop issue off until the truck is out of warranty then you've only succeeded in paying for the repair out of pocket. Instead of trying to put the issue off, maybe it should be accelerated so Ford has to fix the issue while the truck is under warranty?

5.0 has knocking issues and the EB has some timing chain issues. The timing chain stretching causes other issues.
