What is 'loud' to you?
We all know that 'loud' is a subjective term, but what constitutes a loud exhaust to you? Does a vehicle have to be loud to sound good, or can a moderate or mild car sound good too? What are you running?
A constant noise is 'loud' to me. Like diesel trucks with ridiculous 5" exhausts that just DRONE going down the road. I've had plenty of loud mustangs and a couple other cars, but they had the bark when you were on it or playing with the throttle, most would settle back down when just cruising.
I'll admit it, mine is loud! I'm running a Dynomax race series (looks like a resonator) muffler and a side exit in front of the rear tire. 3 1/2 inch in and out with a 4 1/2 inch stainless tip. It was a real trick to fit it under the RCSB truck... But I managed!

In my opinion, a vehicle doesn't have to be loud to sound good. As you said, what sounds good is a matter of taste. Lots of the ricers have loud exhausts that sound terrible to me. When I was 16 I wanted to get a truck and make it as loud as possible... probably not taking into account the tone of it (or effect on my neighbors).
My exhaust on this truck is loud, but I enjoy the tone. It's aggressive, but not overwhelming. A lot of it has to do with driving style... I'm not one to punch it off the line or drive like a maniac so at regular driving speeds on backroads, there's no drone and it's not very loud at all in the cab... same thing with cruise control set at 65 on the highway.
It can be loud if I put my foot into it to pass someone or if someone pisses me off or something though. And at that point, it could probably be obnoxiously loud to some people. Not to me though, I love the sound of my truck.
Everyone around me has Flowmaster or Magnaflow exhausts on their truck, so I wanted something that sounded different.

i'm running a SI/SO Flowmaster thats about 20 years old, with a turn-down right after the muffler. it's been on 6 vehicles, so its a little broken in, haha.
while i like to "hear" my exhaust, a deeper tone is more important to me than volume.
buddy of mine had an old 302 ford with dual 12" glasspacks (that he made louder at the car wash) and "cannon tips". loud enough to make you think your ears were going to bleed. not a good sound at all.
another guy i knew had a 502 in a 67 camaro, with an exhaust that wasn't too obnoxiously loud, but dang near made the earth shake. you could feel it in the pit of your stomach. thats what i like.
