You should look at the dipstick of a 6.7 PSD. It's got a raised "pill" on the end of the stick with some goofy hashes rollmarked into it and is nearly impossible to read. They really outdid themselves with that one.

I'm majorly OCD and even I wouldn't be worrying about this. You guys are spitting hairs over something that just doesn't. matter. By the, I agree with Ricktwuhk, not that it matters.

Seriously, at what point did any of this become, "overthinking" or, "worrying" ?

I'm pretty certain the question i asked was, "what is the hashed area for?"

I mean, seriously, how are people getting themselves up in a twist over this question?! are your eyes glazing over and just think it's a question about how to read the dipstick? or where to fill the oil to??
No, it's a simple question, treat it as such - i thought it interesting due to what hashes are normally used for, and what holes are used for - the owners manual doesn't mention why it would only fill ~90% of the fill range, so it's apparently not important, yet there it is, being useful for holding oil to see, yet not filling the area used for the oil fill range.

Easy question, not sure any of us know why/what Ford did here, but thought i'd ask. I'm just dumbfounded by those getting up in arms over the question, and giving instructions on something that was never asked.

I think some people are bothered that they don't have an answer for why the hashed area was chosen, and the whole fill area is not.

...the one that appears to be 19 years old and does not show a single dipstick that matches the current F150 style?

This is a great example of how social media works so well in the world today...

The 2013 manual picture I posted clearly shows hash marks that don't fill the area between the 2 holes. It also shows that Ford marked the holes and MIN and MAX.

The fact that this is still being debated is pretty amazing.

Why doesn't the hashed area go all the way to the top MAX hole? What is the engineering reason for that, so the oil is allowed to slide down more from the top hole to a certain point?
