The best way to get performance short of forced induction is all about removing restrictions and elimnating the limiting factor. All of this is assuming you already have done ALL maintenance and everything is in proper working order before modding.
-Freeing up the intake while not sacrificing filtration efficiency or sucking in hot air: The Gotts mod is a good filtering CAI and eliminates the main point of restriction. It's also dyno proven, and not a intake company's dyno.
-Freeing up the exhaust: This is headers and a full system for best results, cat back systems only give slight gain, no just chopping the cats does not reduce restriction for any real gains.
-Eliminating parasitic drag: Efans are best at this, the 09+ already have this. UDP's can help but the gains are nothing great.
-Custom tuning: A reputable custom tuner can safely tune the PCM via a programmer (SCT x3 or Gryphon are tops) to take the compromises out of the strategy. By custom tuning to your mods, altitude, driving style, etc maximum power is achieved well within safe parameters. Even on stock vehicles canned devices cannot deliver the gains a custom programmer can provide.

Don't fall for the hype of CAI's that claim to add 30+hp or "chips" that show 69 hp increases. Also ignition upgrades are largely a waste due to COP ignition systems. Every company is going hype their product and provide their "dyno" sheets about their product. Here in the real world those gains simply don't happen. Power and mileage don't always go together. Go into looking for power solely looking for power, any mileage gains seen are only a plus.
