tyre age?
I there any way from a code or something you can tell how old your tyres are?
I've got quite a lot of tread left on my continentals, but they seem to be terrible on traction compares to my buddy's silverado and his rears are almost bald!
I think mine are just old and gone too hard, hence poor traction.

Yes, there is a date code on tires. Here is a link:

Tire compounds also have a lot to do with traction - particularly on wet, or snow/ice covered streets. The tradeoff is that the harder the compound, the longer the tire lasts for a given initial tread depth - but the poorer the traction in certain conditions. One example is high-performance sports car tires - soft compound for good grip, but only last maybe 30-40,000 miles.
The general rule-of-thumb I've gone by is a tire is good for about 7 years of service - then have to worry about dry-rot and other issues.
Another rule of thumb is for the treadwear rating - figure about 200 miles for each point - so that a tire with a 400 treadwear rating should be expected to last about 80,000 miles or so.
