Default Tuner Risks?

Are there any? Anyone with a bad experience? I'm researching the 5star tuners and see it voids the ford warranty, so my dumb question is...why?

I realize it's probably because you're manipulating the stock programming and computer, but are the risks involved?

Thanks for your input!

There is always a risk when messing with the computer on vehicles. But 5 star tunes are extremely safe. It has potential to void the warranty but that is only if you get caught because ford doesn't want people fiddling around with programming.

I bought the warranty that stage 3 offers with my 5 star tunes for peace of mind in case something were to go wrong (whether it be because of the tunes or not) I didn't want to get stuck with an expensive bill since ford is already looking for any reason possible to void warranties.

Everything good in life comes with some risk.
This particular risk is a very small one.
Sure it could hurt your truck....but unlikely.

IF you purchase quality custom tuning using the SCT platform from a quality vendor, you can mitigate a LOT of the risk by doing your part - and that is datalogging the tuning, sending those logs back to the vendor for review and potential tuning adjustments. Do this iteratively until no potential problem areas remain.

The cost of the data review and correction is included in the total cost of the tuning. It behooves you to leverage that investment. The vendor can supply you with the exact PID's / DMR's to log, and instructions fer performing same.

The other way to minimize risk it to ensure yer truck has had ALL the maintenance items up to snuff, that can affect the tuning. Things like fuel filter, air filter, fresh plugs with the correct gap, fresh front O2's, no vac leaks, no DTC's / CEL's / stored pending codes, etc, etc. Tuning is NOT a bandaid for a vehicle with pre-existing issues.

Good luck

Thanks for the input so far. I have 2014 with the 3.7 liter and the tuner appeals to me bc it helps with the lag/slow response in lower gears.

I have used 5 star before on other vehicles.
Plan to order another soon for this new truck.
Never had a problem.

There was a post a month or so back of someone with a 3.7 that didn't think the tune was worth it.
