Default Truck won't move in reverse or drive

When I started the truck the engine sounds fine, but when I put the truck in reverse or drive it doesn't move, unless I rev on the gas. But when I rev on the gas the truck jumps backwards or forwards, depending on what gear I have it in.

It's a 2004. V8, 5.4L engine. Auto trans. 2WD I think. 116290 miles

The brakes are fine.

Did you check the transmission oil level?

You "think" it is 2 wd?
Is there a handle on the floor to switch to 4 Lo?

My '01 5.4 2WD made a big "BANG" going down the road at 160,000 miles. It would move forward in 1st gear only, no reverse. My favorite local mechanic priced refurbed transmissions from Ford and Jasper. Ford was on sale that day and had a better warranty. Installed in 2009.

I was just told by a neighbor that I need a rear end differential. What does this mean? Can I replace one myself? Is there a temporary work-around?

means your truck needs a new rear end. Won't move without one

Okay through trial and error I just found out it is not the rear end that's causing the problem. It's the transmission.
