Default Truck Cap Question

I have a '13 screw 5.5' bed in tuxedo black. I want to put a cap on it but don't want to spend the $1500 or so for new as I probably won't have this truck more than 3 more years. My previous truck was an 09 Ram that I put the cap from an 07 on. The 07 had a flat tailgate and the 09 had the rounded tailgate. I was able to make it work by cutting the aluminum on the bottom of the shorter and riveting the channel for the rubber seal higher on the window. The bed stayed dry in rain and snow till I traded it for this truck. I was wondering if anyone had done the same with an older cap on their Ford? From the reading I have done it appears that the tailgate is the major difference between the 04 - 08 and the 09 - 14 beds. I just want to confirm this.

Thank You
