In lieu of getting a full size tool box for the bed of your truck has anyone used these jobsite toolboxes?
After looking at how heavy duty they are I'm considering getting one. I don't need the full size of a toolbox that goes from side to side in the bed of my pick up truck and I think a small 3' wide chest will fit the bill. The skids on the bottom of the box for a forklift can be torched off so the box will sit nice and flat in the bed of your truck and you can still bolt it to the bed. I know these colors are hideous but it wouldn't take much to sand it down and then paint it with a bedliner coating.
Not sure what kind of truck you have, but I know with my crew cab/short box, any toolbox would make it useless.
I just use a big plastic box, that I can remove whenever needed. Sits under the rails, underneath my tonneau.
I had one of your black boxes when I was deployed overseas in 2003.. Held up for 13 months in the Desert.
I just need something with a little more security that I can bolt down to the bed of the truck and not worry about it being ripped off. I don't have a bed cover either.
More than likely going to get the ridgid. It has 16ga steel and the kobalt has 18ga. Both are same price too
By the time you bolt something like that to the floor you're giving up an awful lot of bed space that might be needed later to haul bigger stuff. And it won't be an easy job to take it out if you need to do so. A traditional box that sits on the bed rails provides lockable dry protection with room underneath for lumber or longer stuff. I'm sure it will work, but I don't see where you gain anything over something designed for the job.
I had a small jobsite box like that in the bed of a Ranger, never bolted it just ran a chain and lock along with a strap.
For weather protection as is they are iffy, I just used foam weatherstrip and even driving through a snow storm on the highway never had an issue with weather getting in, however if you go this way the weatherstrip I used had a bad habbit of heat sealing and making the box a real bear to open.
