Default Transmission Slipping

I have a 2004 F-150 XLT 5.4L 4x4. My transmission keeps slipping when shifting into overdrive. It shifts fine through all other gears so I have been driving with the overdrive set to off. What is causing it to do this? Is there some sort of overdrive sensor that has maybe gone bad? I need help and don't really have the money right now to replace the transmission.

The overdrive gear is worn out. I would go into the whole thing but it would bore you, and confuse you even more. You are going to need a rebuild soon. all overdrive is, is a gear ratio that allows you to maintain high speeds at low rpm's. Thats why when you pass your transmission drops down a gear.

Ford's also have a problem with the overdrive gear going out. If I replace mine when it started I wouldn't of had to spend as much as I did on a rebuild.

You don't just replace one part when you rebuild a transmission. It is not cost effective. If you rebuild a transmission you do the whole thing. You have to pull the whole transmission apart to get to almost all other parts.
