Transmission Replacement Question
Hi all - first time poster.
I have a 2016 Crew Cab with the 5.0 (so the 6R80 Transmission). I had an issue where the transmission seemed to stay in Park even though the shifter worked and indicated so on the instrument cluster (ie: showed change in gears) however the truck remained stationary. Rear wheels remained locked like it was in park, and giving gas just raised the RPM and there was no indication of the engine torquing or labouring - it behaved like it was in park. No luck with trying to engage 4H or 4L. In the end I had it taken to the local dealer for service.
Here's my issue. The tech spent 20 hours of labor "diagnosing". No codes and no metal in the fluid or filter. No apparent or obvious indication of failure. In the end, my understanding is that the transfer case was somehow jammed and they are going to replace the case and also the tranny and associated components. I'm good with this... KM are 320K, so i'm not shocked to be at this point (my previous mechanic and I had surmised the tranny would likely be the major issue with the truck as the rest of it is really in great shape). I really was hoping it was going to be the Lead Frame or something obvious, but I get that it wasn't.
Does 20 hours of labor seem a bit much to have determined that the case and/or the transmission need replacement? I feel like there should be a point where it's suggested that maybe we should just do the replacement, and that shouldn't be on the 3rd day in the barn.
Thoughts?
