Default Transmission Question

Hello everyone. I purchased a 1994 F150 XL, 5.0 V8, 4R70W transmission, RWD for $500. I knew going in that the transmission had an issue. When I test drove the truck, it started out fine but about a mile down the road it seemed to either go into neutral and no matter how much gas pedal I gave it, it wouldn't shift or get power. 10 seconds later, it shifted but did that for the few miles i drove it. No trouble in reverse. Something else I noticed, when I got back to the owners house and checked the transmission dipstick, it looked like new fluid but was way high up the dip stick. It made me immediately think it was overfilled by the person who took it to a mechanic supposedly the day before.
I have looked at a few videos and read a few posts relating to this issue and think the problem might be resolved by three things: 1. Dirty Transmission Filter (purchased a replacement today), 2. Over filled transmission causing cavitation, 3. Shift solenoids bad (or TCC solenoids). My plan is to drop the pan, change the filter and change the dual shift solenoid and the TCC solenoid, and then refill with correct amount of Mercon V fluid.
Any other areas I can quickly/easily replace to see if the problem goes away? I was reading something about the speed sensor also being a potential trouble spot.
I also have an oil leak from the rear main seal I think so I will have to remove the transmission at some point to fix the seal.
I am always open to suggestions and tips. If I do need to buy a new transmission, which is most cost effective? buying one from a place like OReily's or going to local transmission shop? Changing the transmission doesn't look too difficult and I am not afraid of doing the work.
Much appreciated.
