transmission pan

I have an 05 F-150 XLT and I was wondering if it is normal to have a little gap when putting the pan up on the transmission... Until I snug it up.. Is this to hold the filter?

Will be very interested in responses, filters previously were bolted up, another thread a guy said the filter fell off in the pan on tear down. You could be right, everything changes sooner or later.
