transmission gone...
So the other day while driving around at college my truck just stopped and wouldn't move. I had to push it with some help to a parking lot where the drive wouldn't engage. Needless to say I had it towed to a transmission shop nearby, they tore it apart and found that there was a leak of transmission fluid and the tranny got destroyed from the heat. They want 3500 for new tranny and labor, is that a fair price or should I look to a junk yard for a cheaper tranny and just have them put it in?
have you ever heard of anyone having any problems with buying a tranny from a junkyard? I don't have the cash right now because of paying for school so this is one of my only options right now...
Thanks for all the input!

I've heard of people having problems with a tranny they bought at the dealer. A used tranny is never odds on to beat a new one. If you don't have an option and you can do the work yourself, do what you gotta do. Just know that junkyards know they gotcha by the ***** and will charge accordingly.

Tranny's from Transmission shops are rebuilt and warrantied.
F the junkyard tranny.
Ford won't even sell you a brand new one, they will sell you a re-manufactured one. I got one from ford installed for $3500 with a 3 year, unlimited mileage warranty. AAMCO was charging $1800 for a rebuild with a 1 year/ 12k mile warranty.
did you notice any fluid dripping or pooling from your truck? Not trying to be a jerk but it sounds like you are younger and in school still - any chance the mechanic is just bs'ing you? I only ask because when I was still in school I had the wool pulled over my eyes a few times.
As long as the mechanic is telling the truth then I say go for a junkyard transmission. A lot of junkyards will spraypaint DRIVE IN on the side - look for one of those so you know at least the transmission isn't why it's in the scrapyard...
