Trans fluid level

Trans fluid level
What is the correct way to check the trans fluid on my 2001 F150, 5.4L with R100 trans? Hot, cold, running, not running, in gear, in neutral? No matter how I check mine, it is higher than full on the dipstick. It has always been this way since new so when I drain and fill, I put back the same amount that I drained. This puts it over the full mark again. So, I'm wondering if this will harm anything.

Check it hot, in park, engine running.

Ok. I drove home from work yesterday, put it in park, left it running and checked it. The level is just slightly into the "do not add" area. Like maybe 1/8". Should I take some out?
