Default Tranny fluid

My 16 with the 2.7 has almost 63k on it. Was just wondering how often everyone changes the transmission fluid and filter or if you can just do a filter change. Starting to feel like it has a lag in the morning when i first take off with it.

It sure would be handy if the manufacturer would provide a product that has servicing intervals readily available.

Just poking some fun on ya, but you shouldn’t have the need to yet change anything on that tranny.

Per owners manual, my 14 said 150,000 miles I believe.

I had every intention on doing it at 100,000 miles but currently I’m sitting at 120,xxx miles 😬😬

The owners manual for the 6R80 says something like change the fluid at 150k. Personally, I wouldn't follow that. At your mileage, I'd drop the pan, replace the filter, and fill it back up. Repeat that process every 30k afterwards. Dropping the pan and changing the filter will get about 5 quarts out of the trans. If you loosen (don't remove) the (12, I believe, T-30 torx) bolts that hold the valve body to the case, you can get another 3-4 quarts out of it. Doing it that way, you can replace 9 of the 12 quarts in the transmission. Unfortunately, there is no drain plug on the converter like in the older transmissions, so that's as good as you're going to get.

Change fluid and filter every 60k. Use ford filter and gasket. Also change out the black connector that goes through the trans case at the electrical harness, it has 2 o-rings that leak all the time. Pan holds 7 quarts. Wear long sleeves when you are checking the dipstick or you'll burn your arm on the cat.

Personally, unless I have a reason to change the fluid earlier than the manufacturers recommended interval, I don't. Why spend the extra time and money when in all reality its not going to get you any benefit. My '13 had 106k on it with never changing the trans fluid and it still drove down the road.

I wouldn’t call 106k miles high. I want to change mine earlier, to prolong the time on the road. I’m hoping for 300k on mine.

The '96 ATF interval was 30 or 60Kmi (conflicting numbers in Ford documentation). There was no interval for the pan filter, but a TSB published in 2000 (TSB 00-23-10) recommended adding an external inline filter to '89-up F-150s/Broncos, and changing it every 30Kmi.

So over the years, as transmission parts & fluids have improved, the interval has increased. More & more transmissions are filled-for-life. I think my '97 F250 has its factory ATF with almost 300Kmi.

I don't care what the manual says. I live in Phoenix, where summer temps are regularly 110 degrees plus. I plan on changing the fluid and filter every 50k whether it needs or not. I plan on keeping my trucks as long as possible, so I don't want to risk buying a new tranny at 150k miles. Cheap insurance, IMO.
