I believe the owners manual says OD off when towing. Best advice, don't let it "hunt" in and out. If it starts to cycle, turn it off.

I don't know what year FX4 you have, but my 96 F150 owner's manual says you can tow in O/D with the automatic, but not to tow in 5th gear with the manual transmission.

If the trailer is not too heavy, you should be just fine. If you notice the transmission is shifting in and out of O/D too much, take the O/D off and tow that way. I towed a 2,500 pound camping trailer from Connecticut to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and once I got out of the foothill of Connecticut, I put her in O/D and never had a lick of trouble.
