Default Towing Question

I'll just give you the rough specs of the trailer and truck and let me know whether or not I would be able to tow this thing on flat ground for about 10 miles.

Truck: '01 XLT 4.6L 5spd

Trailer: Big Tex 14' Dump (Dry 4,000lbs) + roughly 1-2 tons of material

Thank you. Your comments are appreciated.

For that short of trip, I would say yes...but if you pack that trailer with 2 tons of load, you will definitely be pushing the limits of your truck.

You should have no issue hauling that thing 1000 miles, never mind 10... while empty. Depends on what all you put in it though.

those dumps tend to be nose heavy. You didn't say if using a rcvr. Definitely a no if not using that. expect a much longer stopping distance. Also any good insurance co would win against you in case of an accident.

"For that short of trip, I would say yes."

I don't understand why people think that kind of ****.

Man, having had a 4.6 and a m5OD manual trans... I wouldn't tow 8000 lbs of rolling weight with it. That drivetrain setup is pretty light duty as the transmission is essentially the same as a ford rangers.... I'm sure it would tow it, albeit slow but that clutch is pretty small in diameter and the truck itself is rated according to the towing guide to tow 2000 lbs to 3500 max depending on your axle ratio .

I'm not sure about these numbers. Maybe the 4.2 can only go to 3K pounds, but the 4.6 has to be closer to 6K-7K pounds.

I do have a receiver. I won't tow it if I think it's above 8k.

I would bet tongue weight will put you over your GWVR and rear axle ratings.
