Default Thinking of downgrading truck

Interested to get some opinions on my situation.

I have a 2011 F150 FX4 with quite a few mods, and it's paid for. However, I only use my truck for hunting and hunting related activities really. I don't daily drive it, and have gotten away from even driving it on nights and weekends like I used to since it's more cumbersome than our other vehicles. I've been strongly considering getting rid of it and downgrading to a 10th gen 2001-2003 f150 bc I love that body style. I do really like my truck, but I think i'd rather have the money in the bank than a truck I never really drive that continues to depreciate rapidly. I can do everything with an older truck, and I won't have to worry about scratches and stuff as much, or more importantly the continued depreciation.

Anyway, I'm sure it seems weird to a lot of folks, but just curious to get some opinions . Going to look at a 2002 tomorrow probably.

As long as the replacement is as treasured as the one you have now I see no problem.

In other words be sure this is what you truly want to do.

I've been kicking this around for almost a year probably. I just feel like it's a waste of resources to have this 2011 just sitting in my garage most of the time. And being able to meet my needs with an older truck and putting that money back in my pocket would be nice. It'll be a tough day getting rid of this truck though regardless of how much I like the next truck.

10th gens are solid trucks.

I bought my 2001 supercrew new and still have it today, 218k miles.

If that is what you want, I would do it.

Your plan sounds like a very good idea. For a truck you don't use all that much, an older truck is perfect.

Don't do it!! Your truck is awesome!! Way better looking than the rounded 2001-2003 models. I had one, but when I see them now all I say to myself is at least it's a Ford. Looks wise, one of the ugliest generations in F-150 history.

Personally, I think you are going to miss the size, drive ability, options, and creature comforts of your newer truck compared to a 2001. It's paid for, it doesn't eat, and it's probably not depreciating as much as you think.

You have a debt free truck, and you want to get rid of it because you're afraid of it possibly depreciating rapidly? If you sell it for an older one, just how much money do you expect to get for it, so you'll have "money in the bank"? You know this truck; buying another older used one could be a crap shoot, and end up costing you in repairs.

I think you are just coming up with reasons for selling the current one so you can buy an older one. That's fine. Go for it.

This truck being paid for makes the decision harder. It has lost ~$5k in trade value in the last year, so that's pretty significant IMO. Based on current ranges, I'd expect around $27-28k for it. And the truck I'm looking at I feel like I can get for $9k or a touch less. So, we're talking $18-19k "money in the bank".

My wife doesn't particularly want me to get rid of this truck, but that's a big chunk of change that could go towards a house.

that's a different story all together. If you need the money for something, and not just a rainy day fund, then do it.
