Default Tail gate problem

I have a brand new F 150 with less than a 1000 miles. While hauling light load with tail gate down I hit a small bump at 30 MPH and my tail gate almost fell off! The passenger side hinge popped out of position. Safety cable is only thing that kept whole tail gate from falling off. None of my load was pressing on tail gate. Anyone else come across this problem? I could not reposition tail gate myself and it took 3 guys at dealership service department to get tail gate back on.

The tailgate is designed to pop up on one side so that it can be removed. This is how people steal them very quickly. I would look up the threads about left prevention as it could also resolve your issue.

Basically, you can use a hose clamp to attached to the passenger side so that it cannot easily pop up and out.

Your tailgate should have a lock on it, the lock is at a different point than where it hinges.

My guess is it was just a fluke thing

make sure the latch pins on top are adjusted correctly, they can be moved up/down and/or in/out by loosening them off with a torx socket. tug on each upper corner to make sure they click/lock in place properly.

At the very least, put a hose clamp around the passenger side connector. this will prevent it from disconnecting and or slow down the thieves.

This. Also, keeping it closed or slowing down over bumps when down would also help.

You can also get a masterlock tailgate lock for $20. I have one and it fits and prevents theft.
