Polarized sunglasses work because polarized lens reduce the amount of scattered light that is visible. That's why photographers use polarized filters on cameras, they filter out the scattered light.

I have to agree though, the glare is a pain. It was BAD on our Expedition. We bought some or other interior plastics matte cleaner that made a HUGE difference. Don't remember which product it was though.
