Straight Pipe Question
My muffler rusted out on my 97 F150 4.2 V6 and just cut it off right before it. Now the pipe is coming out right behind the cab. I was wondering what are the pros and cons of just running a pipe with no muffler. I dont plan on taking the cats off. What will this do for my gas millage and performance and also engine wear??
1). In most states, it is illegal to not have a muffler.
2) In states with mandatory annual inspections, you could get dinged a bunch for NOT having it.
3) It is DANGEROUS since the tailpipe is designed to get the exhaust as far away as possible from the cab! When driving, air currents can draw the fumes into the cab and KILL EVERY ONE.
4) Most engines PCMs require some sort of back pressure to keep all the sensors from tossing a code.
5) Finally, the engine is DESIGNED to operate most efficiently with that back pressure and while milage may, and that is a big MAY, improve or stay the same, the emissions will NOT be the same and if caught, could lead to a very hefty bag full of money in fines and repair cost. And if one is caught with improper/non-functioning emissions, the repairs MUST be made at a certified repair facility only.
