I was told that the #1 stolen item on an F150 is the tail gate. Along with the person quoting $5000 replacement, that is what mine was quoted as too - step and camera included.

Go up to a bar in the Poconos, your tailgate is gone. I live in the suburbs have my original tailgate.

After reading all these posts, I ordered the Master Lock Tailgate lock from Amazon. I figured that I would try to be proactive and hopefully keep my tailgate from walking away!

So how the f could i save mine? Locks and stuff only keep the honest guy out. If some one wants it anything bad enough they will take it.

With those slots in it, you could chain it to your bumper!!

stratigically weld razor blades on the underside of your tailgate handle, so that way when a thief trys to open your gate he actually leave his fingerprints behind.

Put a hose clamp on the right side trunion. It'll slow em WAY down. See, if you can open the handle, you can easily just pull the right side up with the tailgate halfway down. Then the left side pulls out towards the center of the truck. If you put an 8 mm bolt headed hose clamp (not flat head - one that doesn't have the spot for a screwdriver) on the right side, it will take them a while to figure out what's going on, and even longer to find an 8 mm socket or wrench or something to take it off. It'll make the steal time from seconds to about 10 minutes with lots of cursing. We do this on all our custom painted tailgates worth thousands $. It's a really good way to slow em down. We always say, if you want it bad enough you can get it though. I would gladly take my tailgate off for someone who had me at gun point. But that's a different story.

I see this as the best option, and cheapest. If you're parked in a parking lot, someone's going to give it a few tugs, realize it's not pulling out then probably just leave it open and go to the next one. At least it's enough to keep Joe-blow thief from strolling up unprepaired. Never seen a gear clamp without the flathead slot though, I'll have to keep an eye out for one. Hey maybe there's one on a truck in the parking lot here haha (Just Kidding!!)

Ha! Well, actually I have a whole tool set in my truck. I work on them daily. I could dismantle a vehicle in my sleep. Get under the hood in a few seconds without damaging anything. Disconnect the battery cables, pop a window, and have my way with anything inside a truck. The one most committed wins. But it's because I have a job. I wouldn't steal. I don't need to. mr7confused has the best idea about it, I think. They'll tug at it and see that something is wrong. Then their little tiny rat sized brain (cause thieves are rats) will get the idea to move on to another. I also think some of the knock off hose clamps have no screwdriver slots.
