Default Steel rims bad for my truck?

I was about to buy black steel rims and new winter tires for my truck when the Costco sales man said on my f150 steel rims could cause damage. He told me what the damage could be but I don’t understand mechanics so I forgot what the explanation was. I didn’t forget the price of what he thought I should buy though.

I don’t what to spend more money but I don’t want to damage my truck.

What should I do?

That's interesting. Pretty sure steel rims won't be a problem. Perhaps he was confused about the F150 body being made out of aluminum.

I dont know if this could be what he was talking about. From the users manual. Page 352.

"Additionally the use of non-recommended tires and wheels could cause steering, suspension, axle, transfer case or power transfer unit failure."

The only mention of steel rims is on page 355.

"If you need to use cables, it is recommended that steel wheels (of the same size and specifications) be used, as cables may chip aluminum wheels."

Aren't the XL standard wheels steel? And the spare tire? I don't see a steel wheel being an issue, personally.

Steel wheels should be fine IMHO.

Your spare is a steel rim.... No issue with steel rims, just usually heavier.

I have an XL with factory steel wheels. 251k miles, so I think you'd be safe with steelies.

He has no idea what he is talking about. Basic factory wheels are steel and so is your spare.

Unless he sold you wheels of the incorrect size or spacing there is nothing they could do to cause damage.

What should I do?

First... avoid Costco!
Second.... get some steel rims, FORD wouldn't offer them if they weren't usable

"The guy at Costco, working in the tire department said......." That was enough for me.
