Speakers
this is only my opinion so take it with a grain of salt, but i think an amp (that's rated slightly higher in watts than the speakers can handle) pushing cheaper speakers sounds better than a head unit pushing great speakers. it also relates to pro-sound too... I have 4 400watt @ 8 ohm peavy tls4's (1 18's and a horn in each) they sound better with a crown 2000 watt amp for each pair than my buddy's much more expensive speakers (carvin) sound with an amp that matches the wattage of the speakers correctly. I have damaged pro-sound speakers (mostly horns) by under powering them
This is why I suggested infinity as they have a very high sensitivity rating which makes them very efficient to run on lower watts and still sound good and then if and when he upgrades to an amp the same speakers will be able to be pushed to their RMS without problems.
It would be like adding a turbo to a Yugo, it may be cool for a bit but eventually something is going to give.
And for the minimal investment and ease if I stall action of speakers vs amps, speakers are the way to go first.
I have to agree with Res4cue. The old adage for audio systems is buy the best possible speakers you can afford, then upgrade your components as budget allows. Good quality speakers will make lower quality components sound better, but low quality speakers will not necessarily make high quality components sound better.
Have to disagree here as the stock speakers don't have the range and are just a single speakers vs components you can get.

If you're going for a cleaner sound like bose used to advertise with their wound wave and aren't trying to get much of an increase in volume before sound degradation, then higher end speakers are the way to go. If you are only trying to increase sound quality at higher volumes then IMO the amp is the first step.
Timely thread, as I think that speakers might be the first thing I do to my truck. I don't need a killer system, but I think the fronts, at least, are blown, and sound terrible. Thanks for the information all.
For those who have taken off the door panels, how hard was it? I'm always leery about scratching up the interior of my truck or not getting a panel back on correctly.

I suggest getting a door tool kit, it's plastic tools to help remove panels without scratching things but if you're good with tools you can use stuff in the tool box like I did.
The hardest part is aligning the lock shaft to go back in hole on panel.
Since pro audio was brought into this conversation, I should chime in as that is my job.
First, NEVER equate Bose' BS marketing claims with "pro audio". Ever.

Here is a good article about matching amplifiers to transducers (speakers)
http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/h...s_loudspeaker/
The gist is: double the amplifier rating to the transducer's RMS rating. And don't forget to match the Ohm rating between the two.
As a reference, here are a couple pictures of a typical day at the office for me.
The first one is from the Fiesta Oyster Bake in San Antonio this last weekend.

Thanks for better explaining what i was trying to get at with amp power...I have 2 pair of the cheap peavy tsl4's (2 18's and a horn) with my 2 crown 2000 (each powering one pair) sounds better than my buddy powering his carvins (forget which ones but much higher quality) with his carvin 800 watt amp (it came as a set) running both setups at 8 ohms... hooking up using the same amp to power mine is terrible compared to his but with my crown, I am louder (which makes sense, more power) but I'm clearer at those higher volumes too.
