Default Sound system died

My truck's sound system finally gave up the ghost. My question is can this particular system be replaced by any head unit or does it have to be another Ford unit?

You can do aftermarket provided you get the right bezel kit to fit your dash. Check www.crutchfield.com for vehicle specific applications.

I had this oem system in my truck.

Replaced it with this Alpine system that maintains sync and steering wheel controls, new bezel came with all the a/c controls but also puts them on the 9" touch screen. I think they have the same kit for your style dash as well.

EDIT: This one should fit your truck. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500X00...le-System.html

They have other less expensive options just giving you an example.

Crutchfield is the place to go. reps. are very knowledgeable and they will give you any adapters needed, along with clear instructions

You don't say but If you want to keep your rig stock then either boneyard or try a place like this:

https://www.1factoryradio.com/

Years ago I used 1factoryradio when i needed to upgrade my old cassette only XJ radio to a compatible factory stock CD radio.
It was plug and play with same connectors and mounting holes and a lot less hassle than installing some 3rd party radio.
Took less than 5 minutes to swap radios.

Another good option indeed. We have a local pull-a-part company and they sell used radios dirt cheap. Quality aftermarket systems are also plug-n-play, mine was. Took me all of about 5 mins to install as well.
