Question Sort Of Confused

Hi, I purchased a 2005 f-150 2 years ago new. My truck has 42,000 miles on it now and the service manager says it is going to need new back brakes soon. My question is that any other vehicle I have owned I usually go through 2 sets of front brakes before I have to change the back brakes. Now for some reason my back brakes are going out first. Could someone please help me understand this?

Usely it is the fronts but I have seen it before that the rear wear out first. Whatever the reson, big heavy truck, towing. Dont really know. Just tell them you want to see the old pads after they change them. How much is left on the front, it could be an adjustment problem from the factory If the fronts are less then 50% I would have them changed also and properly adjusted.

My truck needs brakes all the way around. I have 54k on them. They don't pull or pulse so hopefully my rotors are still good.

Default Is it possible

That you (or perhaps your wife) drove around with the emergency brake on? Traditionally, (and I may be wrong with newer trucks, someone correct me if I am) but the rear breaks are almost exclusivly used for the emergency brake with your front brakes providing your day to day stopping power while driving.

that is wrong, your rear brakes are used all the time, where the rear pads of the rear brakes are only used in the emergency brake.

Not real sure on the new models but usualy you have a proportioning valve. which makes the fornt pads used more than the rear.... i have seen the valve go bad or get gunked up over the years and fail to keep the percentages correct. Not saying this is your problem but just to let you know that there is hardware that could make your back brakes wear first...

I work in a shop, although unusual we have see rear brakes wear before the front. You can request to see your old parts. Since its not a warranty issue get a second opinion if youhave doubts.

The new trucks have shoes inside the rotor for the parking brake.

If the e-brake actuators stick, you will wear the rear pads faster. Have the tech check, lubricate the actuators.
