shifter problems

Well, since you won't provide enough information, I doubt you're going to get much help.
I have had an 86 and a 96, both autos, and both had a little bit of slack in the column shifter. I attribute that to age and use just wearing down some bushings somewhere within the steering column. They both had over 200k on them. Never had a problem getting Into gear or staying in gear. I've also had an 06, 11, and my current 13 that were/is an auto, and there is no slack. I also had a 93 and an 04 that were manuals. The 93 had a little play while in gear, but the 04 was pretty right.
