Default Shift kit

Going to have my tranny rebuilt here soon once I sell my jeep and looking to put a shift kit into it and also maybe get a tuner. The truck is a 4.6 98 xlt extended cab. What tuner and shift kit combination would you guys put together and give me the best results for power/MPG when I want it. And also is it even possible to put these 2 together. Sorry for the long post guys

Automatic or Standard? Hard to help with a shift kit when you don't know which type of transmission. Most of the tuners change the shift points anyway since the autos are electronically controlled. If it's a standard, they don't make the shift kits anymore for them and tuning doesn't do much since so much of it relies so heavily on changing the shift points.

Its an auto. The 4r70w or however it goes. So your thinking just a tuner? Which one is most affective and what am I looking at cost wise?

An automatic transmission's main focus is smooth shifting between gears.[1] To accomplish this it often goes into two gears at once while shifting up, which is known as a shift overlap. In these cars, it is a kit that can reduce or eliminate the shift overlap.[2] It will also reduce wear because the transmission won't be trying to drive in two gears at once.
Typically, adjusting the shift 'pattern' in an automatic gearbox involves interrupting the signal from the ECU to the transmission (usually with a switch, though the adjustment can be made permanent). The resultant shift pattern is usually very aggressive (it will 'bang in' to gear) thus making a car a handful in the wet[citation needed] as well as opening the possibility of damage to already weakened transmission internals.

For manual transmission equipped cars, it is a component that replaces the stock gear selector (shifter). A shift kit usually shortens the throws of selecting a gear (also known as a short throw shift), therefore allowing a driver to reduce the shift time and change gears more efficiently.

gotta love wikipedia..couldnt have typed all that myself

For a tuner, your looking anywhere between $300-$500 depending on the type. For what your probably after, a shift kit for your transmission isn't really needed unless your doing some serious racing or other things and usually requires that the valve train of the transmission be torn down to swap a couple of springs, relocate check *****, and possibly reroute the fluid flow. Most bang for your buck, the tuner. It will slightly tune the engine and noticeably change shift points and allow you to have settings for say towing, racing, or economy.

SCT X3 with Troyer custom tunes and Troyer valve body, FTW.
